I platinumed sonic unleashed and generations, I played a ton of sonic colors, I played sonic adventure 1 and 2 on multiple platforms, I love sonic. Again it's still a unique and fun experience. Sonic has never remotely reached those heights as a 3d series.
The genesis games could be played at full speed, but honestly going too fast would get you killed, there were plenty of levels that you needed to play slowly and precisely. You can see it in this demo, when you start to walk sonic moves too quickly, the camera moves with him super quick as well, the game is ready to ramp up at all times, probably because it has to in order to reach the speeds the game is built around. The game had other mechanics that made it a lot of fun and uniquely sonic, but something that's never really translated is the straight up platforming, because far too often the focus is on the speed. Sonic adventure had some fun ideas, but in no way was the platforming as good as the other two I mentioned. The primary focus has almost always been on speed. The platforming has never been as precise or felt nearly as good as something like rayman or mario. I guess we just have different definitions. However, I would've thought that places like them would've found out about Project Hero and reported on it by now. But it's always been in addition to the standard console releases. The franchise has been on PC since the Saturn days, yes. I find it especially odd that they did, given Sonic's not exclusively PC Bound. I think it's more a case of the ResetEra/Internet/ResetEra effect where it took someone on ResetEra starting a thread to unintentionally cause someone at PC Gamer to notice. There's alot of really good ideas here gameplay and moveset-wise they can learn from! Especially if Shadow and Rouge were to get added to Project Hero at some point. Still, it's awesome that they did, considering, it might further help get SEGA and Sonic Team's attention more about the Fan demand for a new Modern HD Adventure 1/2-Style 3D Sonic game with all the works and a Chao Garden.
Although they might've reported on Mods like the respective Unleashed Project and Super Mario Generations for example as that's for PC Versions of some of the games. Though, Is it common or not for PC Gamer to report on Sonic and Sonic Fangames/ROM Hacks, like other sites like Kotaku and Polygon, now, is it? I don't quite know.
